Fix and Keep
Fix and Keep? Or Sell?
This is a question that every car owner hates to have to answer. And there are always two sides to the coin, no matter how you toss it. Maybe you’ve had that car for a long time, but you still just love it, and you really hate to even think about getting rid of it. It’s been the best car you ever had, right? Well, then, here comes the next question. Is it really worth fixing and keeping? How do you make that determination? Here’s a few things to keep in mind.
How many miles are on it? Is your speedometer in working order, and always that way? Or has it stopped a few times, and maybe your odometer has also quit as well a few times? This is an issue that some car owners fail to think about. The more mileage that is on a car, the more likely that there are things that are going to go wrong with it.
Sometimes, with more mileage, there are big things that are about to go wrong with it. Unless you are an extra good mechanic, that has an easy, convenient place to work on your car, and you have some help, you are probably not going to want to change out a transmission, or swap out a motor. Even having to change smaller parts can be a hassle and a huge headache. With today’s vehicles being so computerized, it almost takes a college degree to even figure out what is wrong with one sometimes!
How much money do you have in the vehicle? By this, we mean how much did you pay for it, how much have you already spent on repairs, parts, tires, and accessories.
Do you realize that even the most well taken care of vehicles are still going to depreciate? No matter what we do to our cars, or for our cars, they still lose value the older they get. Unless you happen to get lucky and have a genuine collector car, which most of us don’t have, then perhaps you should seriously think about just going ahead and selling the vehicle if something major breaks down and has to be replaced.
Also think about investing in the next vehicle. Realize that by taking the money that you would have to use to fix that car, and putting it into a nice, newer, more comfortable car with less mileage on it very well may be the smartest move you can make for your near future!
