A Quick History On Canvas Art Oil Paintings And Where To Find The Best Art
The art medium of painting in oils is believed to have started in Afghanistan in the fifth to the ninth century. Early artists used a technique called ‘oil sketch’ in which the basic composition of the work was applied directly with paint. The use of charcoal and pencil appeared at a much later time. Canvas oil painting dates back to the sixteenth century. In the beginning, paintings were done on wood panels which were very difficult to move and paint did not adhere to them as quickly as to canvas.
Canvas art Oil Paintings are hand painted on heavy canvas. The edges of the canvas are finished by being hand sewn. These paintings are done by hand which makes them unique as opposed to much of modern day artworks which are printed and even airbrushed onto the surface.
The process used in this type of canvas art follows a series of steps with each one being left to dry before the next step is begun. In the first step, the artist sketches the painting to be reproduced using charcoal or special artist pencils. The background areas are painted first and when dry the artist moves on to create depth using careful light and dark color techniques. Textures and details are obtained by using a careful brush stroke technique.
Reproduction of what in the art world is referred to as ‘works of the old masters’ became popular in the 1990′s. These reproductions though still individually painted by hand can now be enjoyed in public buildings as well as in private homes.
